The mission of the Office for Economic Development is to create jobs and economic prosperity by building innovative and competitive companies, industries, defense organizations and cities. A variety of tools are used to drive competitiveness and continuous improvement, including lean enterprise, lean office processes, lean manufacturing, six sigma, financial and capital analysis, strategic value chain design, supply chain integration and optimization, competitive cluster analysis and strategic processes for development of new products and services.

Alabama Technology Network

UAH operates a highly successful regional center for the Alabama Technology Network (ATN) assisting Alabama manufacturers to improve productivity, increase quality and reduce cost. The Center provides lean enterprise, six sigma, and quality training and implementation.

UAH successfully completed 461 projects with 134 companies between 2000-2003. Synovate, an independent third-party, surveyed 100 of UAH’s clients between 2000-2003. The clients reported during this three year period:

       o 299 jobs created/saved
       o $9,010,000 increased sales
       o $78,295,000 prevented loss of sales
       o $5,060,000 cost savings
       o $6,665,000 investment in new plant equipment

UAH's Lean Manufacturing Program is recognized as a leader in helping companies implement lean concepts.  UAH has trained over 1000 employees at 100 companies in Lean manufacturing.

Northeast Alabama Regional Small Business Development Center

NEAR SBDC provides assistance to small businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs. The Center provides business management counseling, startup counseling, training and workshops, and a resource library. The Center is located in the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce in downtown Huntsville.

UAH Research Machine Shop
The Research Machine Shop supports the research projects at UAH. The shop is well equipped with CNC equipment, ISO9000 compliant, compliant with NASA 5300.4 standard for quality, and has a bonded storage area for certified materials with traceability. The shop occupies over 4,800 sq.ft. with 3,800 sq.ft. of manufacturing area. The shop has an inspection room, tool crib and 2,500 sq.ft. of fenced limited access outside storage area.

BizTech Huntsville High Technology Incubator
BizTech is located on Sparkman Drive across from the UAH campus. UAH is one of the partners of Biztech with William Killingsworth serving on the Board of Directors

Alabama Automotive Manufacturers Association
UAH was one of the founding organizations of AAMA. Bernard J. Schroer at UAH serves as the Executive Director of AAMA.

UAH recently completed the 2003 survey of the automotive industry in Alabama.  The Alabama automotive industry continues to grow.  Direct jobs have increased to 31,197 (+3.4%) up from 30,180 in 2002.

Alabama Aerospace Industry Association
UAH was one of the founding organizations of AAIA. Jeff Thompson at UAH serves as the Executive Director of AAIA.  UAH recently completed the 2002 survey of the aerospace industry in Alabama.  203 companies employ 36,253.  Federal jobs are 36,799.
